Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht is coming off a busy offseason, but he believes that the acquisition of future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, who will join head coach Bruce Arians, creates the perfect formula for their win now approach.
“I don’t have a lot of concerns on that right now,” Licht said, during an appearance on SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt (h/t ESPN’s Jenna Laine).
“We have a head coach [Bruce Arians] that, to be quite frank, isn’t gonna be here for the next 15, 20 years coaching the Buccaneers. So I think it was actually a perfect marriage: You’ve got two guys that have got something to prove; they want to win, they want to win now; they’ve got the same mindset.”
While Arians, 67, has about four years remaining on his current deal, there is speculation that he could be done coaching before that deal expires.
On the other hand is Brady, who is 42-years old and signed with the Bucs on a two-year contract during the offseason.
“Getting Tom here, quite frankly, started with hiring Bruce last year,” Licht said. “I don’t know if we would be in this situation right now without Bruce Arians as our head coach. And they’re kind of living parallel lives right now; they’ve got something to prove, and they want to do it now.”
Despite Brady’s legendary career, Licht said spoke about how Brady has conducted himself since arriving in Tampa.
“He didn’t want to come in here and be the almighty,” Licht said. “He just wants to make sure that his teammates respect him. And he’s got something to prove.”
The Bucs believe they have the formula to win a Super Bowl, and for the next two seasons it appears that they will have their shot.
