Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history and the engineer of the Miami Dolphins multiple NFL titles and perfect season died on Monday at the age of 90, according to ESPN.
The Dolphins issued an official statement on Shula’s passing, saying that the Hall of Fame coach died “peacefully at his home.”
“Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years,” the Dolphins said in a statement. “He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scene. Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Anne along with his children Dave, Donna, Sharon, Anne and Mike.”
Shula will forever be associated, and considered the architect, of the glory years of the Dolphins’ franchise, winning an NFL record 347 games (including the playoffs), coaching the Dolphins to and undefeated championship season, and leading the team to five Super Bowls, winning two of those title games.
Shula was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
