The NFL’s Washington team has selected a temporary name, effective immediately, to use for the 2020 season as they continue their work to find a permanent name.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Washington officially announced that it will will call itself the “Washington Football Team” pending the adoption of a new name.
This will not be the final name for the team, but the name it will use until it does complete it’s official renaming and rebranding. In continuing the process of retiring it’s former name, the franchise hopes to be entirely rid of it on physical and digital spaces in the next 50 days, by the Sept. 13 regular-season opener.
The team will not make any changes to it’s color scheme, which will remain burgundy and gold, and instead of the prior logo, the players number will be displayed on the helmet.
“You’re doing a rebranding process that correctly takes 12 to 18 months. If you want to do it right, you have to take a deep breath, take a step back and go through the process,” he said. “We want to do it right. We want something thoughtful and inclusive and smart and bring a lot of points of views into this and come out the other side with something everyone is proud of and can rally behind.
“It feels organic and natural to do this” Terry Bateman, the franchise’s new executive vice president and chief marketing officer said.
“I love the look of what we’ve done. It’s really strong. I like the logo and the uniforms and the colors. … There’s a tremendous amount of work to do for the next 50 days to do all this. It’s a tremendous amount of work to go through this. The new will go up, and the old will go down.”
