The New York Yankees have activated closer Aroldis Chapman from the injured list and will step right back into his role as the team’s finisher, according to an official team announcement.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees designated right-hander David Hale for assignment in order to create the necessary roster space for the addition of Chapman.
Hale, 32, was pitching well, to the tune of a 3.00 ERA this season.
In other news, the Yankees will be without infielder DJ LeMahieu for two-to-three weeks, manager Aaron Boone announced, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
LeMahieu will receive a second opinion on his hand tomorrow, visiting with the same specialist who treated him for his thumb injury back in 2018.
The Yankees remain confident that the thumb injury will not require surgery, but with LeMahieu out of the lineup, they will have to lean on their depth, including Miguel Andujar, to pick up the massive slack left by LeMahieu who is hitting .411/.456/.534 this season.
