The San Francisco 49ers have closed the book on the tenure of wide receiver Dante Pettis, by officially releasing him, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Pettis, a former second-round draft pick, had been disappointing, and his release comes after the Niners were “trying and failing to trade” him.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein, if a team wants to take a chance on Pettis, it will only cost them $264K in cap space to claim him, which would prevent Pettis from hitting free agency altogether.
