The Houston Astros have agreed to terms with veteran catcher Jason Castro on a two-year deal, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Chandler Rome.
The new deal is pending a physical, and when the deal is completed it will mark a return for Castro to the Astros organization, which drafted him back in 2008 out of Stanford.
Castro, 33, has spent three seasons with the Minnesota Twins and has built a reputation for his ability to pitch-fram and his knack for drawing walks at the plate.
Castro couldn’t follow up a stellar 2017 season that landed him a new three-year, $24.5 million deal with the Twins, as he missed most of the 2018 season following meniscus surgery. Castro was able to bounce back in 2019, but had to split time with Mitch Garver who had a breakout season.
Castro played for the Los Angeles Angels and the San Diego Padres during the 2020 season, hitting .188 with 2 homeruns and 9 runs batted in.
