After a long stretch of negotiations, the New York Yankees are closing in on a new deal with infielder DJ LeMahieu that will keep him in pinstripes for the next several seasons.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Yankees are finalizing a six-year, $90 million contract with LeMahieu, who finished third in American League MVP voting this past season.
There is no questioning LeMahieu’s value, which is part of the reason as to why he was considered one of the prized free agents available this offseason.
LeMahieu collected his second career batting title in 2019, hitting a league-leading .364 and becoming just the fourth player in Yankees history to lead the majors in that category, along with Mickey Mantle (.353 in 1956), Joe DiMaggio (.381 in 1939) and Lou Gehrig (.363 in 1934).
LeMahieu, 32, initially rejected a one-year, $18.9 million qualifying offer by the Yankees.
