Philadelphia Phillies manager Joe Girardi is not worried about his job security amid a losing skid that currently has the Phillies 10 1/2 games behind the New York Mets in the National League East division.
Girardi, who is in the final year of his three-year deal with the Phillies, isn’t thinking about his future with the team. The Phillies have lost 10 of their last 14 games and ended a seven-game road trip by squandering a ninth-inning lead to the rival Mets, who swept the 3-game weekend series.
The Mets are 9-3 against the Phillies this season.
“I don’t worry about my job,” Girardi said (h/t ESPN). “I’ve never worried about my job. I don’t worry about my job. I’ve got to do my job. It’s the business of being a manager. I don’t worry about it.”
Despite a $233 million payroll (fourth highest in the majors), the Phillies are struggling with a 21-27 record.
“Good teams don’t do that,” Phillies slugger Bryce Harper said of latest Phillies loss. “Getting walked off twice in games we should have won. It’s tough — big homer, big homer and lose. It’s crushing.”
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, multiple Phillies players pondered a perceived lack of energy from fellow players this season.
Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos said the he doesn’t “know how to describe the energy now, but it’s obviously not where it needs to be”.
“I think it looks like we are not having fun because the expectations are really high,” Phillies pitcher Kyle Gibson said to the Inquirer. “Even when you win a game, it’s easy to say, ‘Great, we won today, but we’re still 10 games off from where we want to be.’ I think that’s an attitude that has to be flipped.”
