49ers Allowing Jimmy Garoppolo to Negotiate Contract with Teams

1 Min Read

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains on schedule to resume throwing which will help facilitate a trade to land him on a new team, however the $24.2 base salary he is due this season may prove to be a major hurdle for any team interested in the veteran signal caller.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, The 49ers are planning to allow Garoppolo to negotiate his contract with other teams ahead of any potential trade. However, it appears that only the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns could absorb his contract without having to make other moves.

The Browns already made their big move at quarterback by trading for Deshaun Watson, and the Panthers are not planning to trade for Garoppolo, despite being linked to a number of quarterbacks during the offseason.

Complicating things further is Garoppolo’s injury history.

The report goes on to say that the Seattle Seahawks and the Panthers may be interested in adding Garoppolo as a free agent. Apparently, it appears that whomever loses out in acquiring quarterback Baker Mayfield from the Browns this offseason will be the frontrunner for Garoppolo, given that he is a free agent.
