The Seattle Mariners have acquired veteran first baseman/designated hitter Carlos Santana, along with cash, from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handers Wyatt Mills and William Fleming, according to an official team announcement.

As a result of the trade, the Royals are now expected to feature top prospect Vinnie Pasquantino, whose contract has been formally selected from Triple-A Omaha. In a corresponding move the Royals designated right hander Ronald Bolanos for assignment to clear a spot on their 40-man roster.

Santana’s departure ends a disappointing tenure with the Royals, who inked him to a two-year, $17.5 million contract ahead of the 2021 season.

Santana, 36, has picked up his play as of late, and the Royals are paying the vast majority of what remains on Santana’s contract.

Pasquantino has posted a .280/.372/.576 batting line with 18 home runs, 16 doubles and two triples this season in Triple-A with the Storm Chasers.
