Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper suffered a fractured thumb when he was hit by a pitch during Saturday night’s game, and following further testing over the last few days to determine his treatment it appears that he will be heading for surgery.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber, Harper “is expected to need surgery” to repair the fracture. Undergoing surgery doesn’t mean that Harper’s season would come to an end, but he could be looking to miss at least two months of action.
While it is extremely unlikely that he avoids surgery, if Harper were to avoid it he would still miss around four-to-six weeks at minimum, per the report.
The Phillies have turned things around following the firing of manager Joe Girardi and are in the mix with the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants for the final National League Wild Card spot.
Harper is hitting .318/.385/.599 with 15 home runs through 275 plate appearances for the Phillies this season.
