Los Angeles Dodgers legendary starter Clayton Kershaw is “excited” that fellow Dodgers front-line starter Julio Urias is currently in line to take the mound for the Dodgers on Opening Day, a spot Kershaw has held many times throughout his career.
Kershaw, a three-time National League Cy Young Award winner for Los Angeles, has made a franchise-record nine Opening Day starts for the Dodgers.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has yet to announce who will take the hill when the Dodgers take on the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 30th, and Urias will pitch on Friday in a Cactus League game against the Milwaukee Brewers as he makes his return from playing in the World Baseball Classic.
Urias pitching on Friday would put him on a timeline to be able to start against Arizona on Opening Day.
“I’m excited for Julio to get to do it,” Kershaw said (h/t Associated Press). “I’m assuming Julio gets to do it. He deserves it. It is a special thing to get to do it. I think it should be whoever pitched the best the year before and he did that.”
Urias, 26, is come off a season in which he posted a 17-7 record while pitching to the tune of a 2.16 ERA over 31 starts for the Dodgers last season, finishing third in the National League Cy Young Award voting.
