WWE superstar Bray Wyatt, whose real name was Windham Rotunda, died on Thursday at the age of 36 according to an official announcement issued by WWE chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque on social media Thursday evening.

Wyatt, who had been with the company since 2009 and is widely considered one of the best wrestling minds of his generation, had been inactive over the past several months in WWE while dealing with an undisclosed health issue.

Wyatt was released in a shocking move in 2021 but made his highly anticipated return a year later in one of the most exciting and creative builds to date. Wyatt had been building up a new form of his character, and was expected to have a match with Bobby Lashley at this year’s WrestleMania that was ultimately scrapped due to Wyatt’s illness.

“Just received a call from WWE Hall of Famer Mike Rotunda who informed us of the tragic news that our WWE family member for life Windham Rotunda — also known as Bray Wyatt — unexpectedly passed earlier today,” Levesque wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Our thoughts are with his family and we ask that everyone respect their privacy at this time.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rotunda family at this time.
