Dolphins Make Solid Move With Addition of Arian Foster

The Miami Dolphins missed on a couple of running back targets this offseason. Whether it was restricted free-agent Cj Anderson of the Denver Broncos or the prospect Ezekiel Elliot who was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, the Dolphins missed out.

Despite indications that 2nd-year running back Jay Ajayi was ready to lead a young running back corps by taking the lead role, Miami still was interested in adding some veteran depth.

Recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered in October and cut earlier this year by the Houston Texans, Arian Foster was on the Dolphins’ radar and today they signed the 29-year old running back to a one-year deal.

Foster’s deal with Miami is worth $1.5 million that includes incentives that could bring the total value of the deal to a max of $3.5 million, a league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Despite his 2015 season being mostly wiped out, Foster showed moments in 2014 that hinted he was in the prime of his career and had plenty left in the tank. In fact, many would say Foster’s performance level was they best of his career.

But as often the case with Foster, injuries have kept him sidelined and he spent most of this offseason getting healthy. Foster has spent his offseason working out at IX Innovations, which is owned by his brother, Abdul Foster, who said back in March of this year: “Arian’s doing great.”

Miami had shown interest in Foster earlier this offseason and he had a 2nd meeting scheduled with the Detroit Lions for later this week. Miami made sure Foster wouldn’t leave South Florida without a contract.

The addition of Foster allows Miami to lean less on Ajayi, which will help his development, and, more importantly, rely on a unproven and rather lackluster running back depth chart that includes Daniel Thomas and Isiah Pead.

It seems that Foster and Ajayi will split carries which, in theory, will limit the wear and tear on Foster and help keep him on the field and away from the sidelines. If healthy, Foster’s productivity could pay huge dividends to a Dolphins’ offense that is primed to showcase a renewed commitment to the running game.

Foster’s experience will also impact the running back room and help further unify a Miami offense. Foster also provides a valuable, proven and experienced offensive weapon for quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Should all the stars align for Foster (staying healthy, being productive) expect him to be included along fellow Dolphin Cameron Wake on the list of candidates for the NFL’s ‘Comeback Player of the Year’ award.

Pick 5: Week 3 NFL Picks

Avatar

Published

on

Week 3 is coming up and we are still batting above .500 so lets recap last weeks picks and take a stab at five more games for this Sunday.

Hits: Chiefs, Buccaneers and Falcons … Misses: Jets, Panthers

I took the bait on the big 14 points the Jets were getting and I got burned. Panthers won their game but they didn’t cover the spread. So last week we ended up with a 3-2 and overall on the season we are 5-4.

Week 3

Falcons (-3) @ Lions

Despite what happened in Super Bowl the Falcons are still a top tier team in the NFL. Until injuries or tape show us chinks in the armor we are going to ride the Ryan, Julio and Freeman express until they let us down. The Lions are much improved and I am tempted to take the home team with the three points but …. nah. Our pick: Falcons

Giants @ Eagles (-6)

NFC East battles are always a treat to watch and even though the Giants looked terrible last week a small part of me is tempted to ride with them. The Eagles looked decent in a loss against the Chiefs and the Wentz kid is starting to look like a ball player. However, I’m not convinced OBJ is going to be healthy enough to make the difference that is capable of making. We will play it safe, and just stick with the home team. Our pick: Eagles win and cover

Raiders (-3) @ Redskins

The Washington football team escaped the Rams last week and through 2 weeks the Raiders have looked really good. Carr has 5 TD’s on the season and no interceptions. No offense to the Washington team but the Raiders seem to be trending up and we are going to roll with the hot hand. This might end up being a push but we’ll roll with Marshawn Lynch and the boys from Oakland on this one. Our pick: Raiders

Texans @ Patriots (-13)

This is another big number but this time we are gonna stay on the other side. I’m not sure what Bill Belichick’s record vs rookie Quarterbacks is but I’m guessing that it is probably really good. I think the DeShaun Watson can be a good QB in this league but this is going to be one of those game he is going to have to chalk up as a learning experience. Our pick: Pats win

Seahawks @ Titans (-3)

Russell Wilson and the offensive of the Seahawks have been down right offensive through 2 weeks. The Titans have a formidable defense and our 3 points favorites at home as they should be. However, being the Russell Wilson fan that I am if you give me 3 points of that Seattle defense on the road I’m going to take my chances. Hey what number that Wilson wear again?  … Maybe its a sign from God. Our pick: Seahawks

Texans @ Patriots (-13)

This is another big number but this time we are gonna stay on the other side. I’m not sure what Bill Belichick’s record vs rookie Quarterbacks is but I’m guessing that it is probably really good.
