Sean McVay Says He Never Considered Benching Jared Goff

2 Min Read

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay caused some waves when he called out quarterback Jared Goff following the Rams loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, but has expressed his continued confidence in Goff despite his struggles this season.

“I wouldn’t say things if I didn’t know there was broad shoulders to be able to handle it,” McVay said, according to ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry. “Maybe while it was a little bit different approach, I think it was something that was honest that I know he’s capable of correcting.

“If anything, I think it’s a reflection of the confidence I have, because I can be demanding of him in some of those settings, whether it be publicly or privately with our team.”

It’s been a frustrating season for Goff, who has turned the ball over 14 times this season, including multiple turnovers during losses, highlighted by a four-turnover performance against the Miami Dolphins in a losing effort.

“If I thought it was going to be the best thing to just take a deep breath and step away, then I’d say maybe, but not in either of those situations because both of those reflected kind of having an opportunity where there was enough plays made to get back in it,” McVay said. “So [Sunday], that was never part of the consideration, nor was it really for Miami.”

The Rams are still in the thick of things for the playoffs, and have a solid 7-4 record, but Goff turning things around could help the team reach the next level and hit a stride for the stretch run of the season.
